Title: Regarding Joel Skousen Copyrights
Post by: Mill on April 29, 2013, 09:11:53 AM
There has been some concerns about my posting of extracted portions of the World Affairs Brief by Joel Skousen.  Even though my posting has always technically been within the "partial with attribution" guidelines which is permitted by the copyright, I can understand how posting such large pieces might cause some concern. So, I asked Joel about it.  Here is was the exchange:

Hi Joel,

I participate on various internet forums.  From time to time when there is a brief about something really important, I post a whole section to the forum in order to get the information out.  When I do it, I always attribute World Affairs Brief and include your Copyright notice from the brief.

Recently I did it with your synopsis of the Boston Bombing.  Is this permitted under your "partial quotations with attribution" policy?  I think a the end of the day we are all just trying to get the information out and wake people up but I wanted to check with you to make sure.

Thank you.

I should clarify that this is actually on one single forum and I've done this about three or four times in two years when there has been a real important matter.  It seems like this technically fits within the "partial with attribution" but I just wanted to run it by you to make sure.  Also, by a "whole section", I do not mean a whole brief but just a subsection per your section headers.

Thank you.

It is as long as you never post the entire brief, and if you don't do it regularly so that people never need to subscribe.

Thanks for asking,

Best,  Joel

By the way, for anyone interested, the World Affairs Brief is a weekly publication sent out by Joel where he analyses various world events.  He has done a lot of research on the current government world conspiracy that we are facing and he has written books like:

The Secure Home (this is the leading book on building a secure home (maybe 900 pages or so))
North America Strategic Relocation Guide

I like him because unlike many other "conspiracy folks", he takes a longer more relaxed approach.  ie, he's not saying that martial law will be declared next week.  He's a bit more level headed and measured but he has a large amount of knowledge in the area.  He will also do personal consulting for $60/hr which is very reasonable.

The World Affairs Brief is about $50 or so per year and comes once a week.

I think it is good you went directly to the source. I have a lengthy article I want to post in whole and have sent an inquiry to the author to see if it is OK. I am quite positive they will gladly give their permission but I won't presume on their wishes.

One thing for certain - what is partial to some is something altogether different with another. I am a firm believer and supporter of private property and rights so I would tend to error on the conservative side of what constitutes partial quotes. I certainly do not want to violate the private property rights of anyone.

So, if in doubt contact the author. If that is not really feasible and you want to post something that has copyrights then a few sentences extracted with the link should be the guideline. If new information comes to my attention I will modify it.
