I'm requesting prayer: Prayer request
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May. At the biopsy it appears it was caught early with a low mitotic rate, low nuclear grade and is well differentiated. The staging will be done after the surgery which is June 25. I am choosing a lumpectomy followed by radiation therapy which will cause a great deal of tiredness. This is the second time I've had cancer (a melanoma diagnosed in 2003) and the first time I basically refused all help, I feel I should not have done that. I need to know the balance in requesting help. Financially, we are debt free and have an emergency fund set up but I make 92% of our money and provide all the insurance coverage so I have to continue working as close to full time through all this that I can. My husband is a hoarder who does not help with the running of the household when I'm healthy and also did not help at all during my first trip through cancer and treatment.

I am a recent survivor of breast cancer; declared "clear" as of March this year. I was diagnosed with Stage 1 in August of 2009 and then had to have several surgeries (I opted for a lumpectomy) in order to get it all. I then went through 6 1/2 weeks of radiation, finishing up just before Christmas.
I will pray for you. I also recommend you find friends who can encourage you, or join up with the cancer support groups that the cancer centers around all have. That support will be VERY helpful. I know the emotional toll is high, even with Stage 1. It is very much a "hurry up and wait" while all the information is being compiled and you get all the doctors in line and you decide what steps you're going to take.
Let me know if you need to talk. I'd love to help encourage you if you need it.

Oh, one other thing. I didn't get too tired during radiation. I found the key was to try to stay active and walk. I did really well; only getting tired towards the last two weeks or so. However, I usually get tired come Christmas anyway. I felt very happy with my energy levels.
I highly recommend going to a homeopathic oncologist at Seattle Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center (near Tukwila). They put me on some good vitamin/herbal supplements that I take to this day. My health is awesome!

Carla: I just read about your diagnosis. I will be praying. No matter what, you WIN! And, that is a good report so soon after surgery!

Thank you for your prayers, they have been appreciated and felt, I only required 4 pain pills after my surgery and never lost any sleep over my diagnosis. My MD visits on 7/6 were further confirmation that my staging is I which is the best. I still require 33 days of radiation treatment to decrease my chance of recurrence to 5-10%. Then I will be on hormone pills daily for 5 years. I will be particiapating in a study which they will categorize my tumor based on 21 genetic markers. I believe, based on my tumor type, that I will not require chemotherapy and I will be followed for 20 years to see if those genetic markers are indicative of the need or lack thereof chemotherapy. I felt a need to give back to the science of breast cancer treatment.

To my faithful prayer warriors, I will be starting radiation therapy tomorrow (8/2) My MD has also said that instead of 33 treatments that I should be OK with 21 treatments. I am requesting prayer for peace as I need to continue working full time and my boss is not able to replace me so my coworker will be alone for anywhere from 1/2 to 2 hours depending on when my appt is. I need to do the treatments but I don't want to feel anxious about what is going on at work while I'm at the clinic. My MD has also said that I should not be getting tired from the treatment as the bone marrow is not being involved. Thank you!!!!!!!!!
